I married a dying man because it was his final wish — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “”He made me wait until today to tell you WHO HE REALLY WAS.

Then the cabin door slammed shut behind us.

And from the hallway came the unmistakable sound of a lock turning.

PART 4 — THE MAN WHO ATTENDED THE WEDDING
For one endless second, Daniel and I stared at each other.

The locked door stood behind him.

The chest remained open between us.

And Carl’s final warning lay on the floor.

The person responsible for destroying our family is still alive.

Yesterday, that person attended our ceremony.

Daniel had attended the ceremony.

My pulse thundered.

“What did you just do?” I asked.

His brow furrowed.

“I didn’t do anything.”

“The door locked.”

He turned and crossed the room. He pulled at the handle, then examined the lock.

“It’s been secured from outside.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

Daniel faced me.

“Yes.”

“Carl’s letter says the person who destroyed my family was at our wedding.”

“I know what it says.”
