I married a dying man because it was his final wish — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “”He made me wait until today to tell you WHO HE REALLY WAS.

Lenora continued.

“She is alive.”

PART 5 — THE WOMAN BEHIND THE GLASS
I could hear the lake moving against the shore.

A slow, patient sound.

Lenora’s words remained suspended in the room.

She is alive.

“You’re lying,” I said.

“I expected you to say that.”

“My mother d/i/ed thirty-one years ago.”

“The woman who raised you d/i/ed. Evelyn did not.”

Daniel stepped closer and silently gestured for me to keep Lenora talking.

“Where is she?” I asked.

“Come to Vale House.”

Thomas shook his head immediately.

Lenora seemed to sense his reaction.

“You have two anxious old men beside you, don’t you? Daniel will tell you it’s a trap. Thomas will start quoting Carl’s instructions. Neither will admit how much they hid from you.”

“You hid me from my own mother.”

“No, Claire. Carl did.”

Daniel took the phone.

“That’s enough.”
