I married a dying man because it was his final wish — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “”He made me wait until today to tell you WHO HE REALLY WAS.

I stepped between them.

“What evidence?”

Thomas removed a small notebook from inside his coat.

“A nurse from the clinic contacted me. She said a wealthy woman came for Evelyn under the name Margaret Cole. The woman produced legal guardianship documents.”

“Lenora.”

“Yes.”

“Where did she take her?”

“I don’t know.”

But Lenora had invited me to Vale House.

I looked toward the black SUV parked among the trees.

“Is that hers?”

Thomas nodded.

“The driver ran when he saw me.”

“Then we use it.”

Daniel objected.

“Claire, listen to me. Vale House is protected by private security. Lenora has survived investigations, lawsuits, and accusations because she never acts without controlling the circumstances.”

“My mother may be there.”

“And Lenora knows that is the one sentence capable of bringing you to her.”

“I spent my whole childhood wondering why I had no family. I am not walking away because the truth might be dangerous.”
