No denial.
No performance.
Only contempt.
“You arranged the boat @ccident,” I said.
“I arranged a conversation with Lucas. He made reckless choices afterward.”
“You caused it.”
“He refused a generous agreement.”
Evelyn suddenly spoke.
“You cut the fuel line.”
Lenora turned.
Evelyn’s eyes were clear now.
“I remember.”
The guards remained motionless.
No one breathed.
“You came to the dock,” Evelyn continued. “You wore your red coat. Lucas said we would never give you the ridge. You waited until he went into the cabin. Then you opened the engine compartment.”
Lenora’s face had become stone.
“Evelyn, you are confused.”
“No.”
My mother looked at me.
“I saw her.”
Lenora crossed the room quickly.
Daniel stepped in front of her.
One of the guards grabbed him.
Thomas shouted.
The conservatory erupted into movement. Chairs overturned. The nurse pulled Evelyn’s wheelchair backward. I reached for my mother, but another guard blocked me.
