When Daniel saw him, he dropped the bracelet key.
“Lucas?”
The man opened his eyes.
And my father looked at me.
PART 7 — THE MAN BENEATH THE HOUSE
My father was alive.
The thought was too large to enter my mind all at once.
Lucas Bennett lay propped against white pillows, his face deeply lined, his hair almost entirely silver. Medical equipment stood beside the bed, but he appeared alert.
His eyes moved from Daniel to Thomas.
Then to Evelyn.
She made a sound unlike anything I had ever heard—a broken whisper filled with thirty-one years of longing.
“Lucas?”
He stared at her.
“Evie.”
The nickname unlocked something inside her.
She rose from the wheelchair.
The nurse reached to support her, but Evelyn shook her off. Her legs trembled as she crossed the archive room.
Lucas held out his arms.
They met beside the bed.
No one spoke.
My mother pressed her face against his shoulder while he touched her hair as if trying to reassure himself she was real.
