I married a dying man because it was his final wish — after his funeral, his lawyer knocked on my door and said: “”He made me wait until today to tell you WHO HE REALLY WAS.

“What did he miss?”

I looked toward the road where the ambulance had vanished.

“He thought he was leaving me alone.”

In reality, Carl’s final plan had returned my mother and father to me.

But one question remained.

Why had he never told me he was my uncle while he was alive?

The answer arrived the next morning.

Not in a letter.

Not in a recording.

A woman appeared at the gates of Vale House carrying a small suitcase and a photograph of Carl.

She introduced herself as Anna Bennett.

And she said she was Carl’s daughter.

PART 8 — THE INHERITANCE NO ONE EXPECTED
Anna was twenty-eight, with dark curls, green eyes, and Carl’s unmistakable smile.

When she entered the conservatory, every person in the room became silent.

She held the photograph against her coat.

“I received an email from my father this morning,” she said. “It was scheduled before he d/i/ed.”
