But it was mine.
The legal process lasted months.
Lenora faced charges connected to unlawful confinement, fraud, evidence tampering, and conspiracy. Because of her age and health, she was held in a secure medical facility while awaiting trial.
She never apologized.
She sent me one letter.
It contained a single sentence:
You will discover that preserving a family requires cruel choices.
I did not answer.
Instead, I visited her.
Lenora sat behind a glass divider in a plain gray room. Without the red coat, the mansion, or the people rushing to obey her, she looked smaller.
“You came,” she said.
“I wanted you to hear my decision.”
She leaned closer.
“What decision?”
“The Bennett land will become a conservation trust, exactly as my grandfather intended.”
Her mouth tightened.
“The Vale corporation will be dissolved. Its legitimate employees will receive ownership shares in the new companies created from it.”
“You will destroy generations of work.”
