I never told my in-laws that my father is the Chief Justice. I spent the entire day cooking Christmas dinner for the family, only to have my mother-in-law make me eat while standing in the kitchen.

He leaned closer.

“I will not become the kind of man David accused the system of being.”

I became quiet.

“He threatened you with connections.”

Dad continued.

“He told you his profession made him untouchable.”

“Yes.”

“Then the answer cannot be for your father to use a more powerful title to punish him personally.”

That hurt.

Because part of me wanted exactly that.

I wanted Dad to make one call.

I wanted doors to slam shut.

I wanted David to understand what it felt like to be powerless.

But Dad was right.

“So what happens?”

“The same thing that should happen if your father were a plumber.”

I almost smiled.

“Dad.”

“You give a truthful statement.”

He squeezed my hand.

“Medical professionals document what they observed.”

“Witnesses give their accounts.”

“Police investigate.”

“Prosecutors make independent decisions.”

“And any professional-conduct issue goes through the proper disciplinary process.”

I looked at him.
