The answer was never my father’s name.
The answer was mine.
Anna.
Teacher.
Mother.
Daughter.
Woman.
Witness to my own life.
My father’s title did not make my injuries real.
It did not make my no more valid.
It did not make my testimony worth more than another woman’s.
And it did not make me deserving of protection.
I deserved those things before David knew who my father was.
I deserved them while I was standing in his kitchen cooking for people who treated me like hired help.
I deserved them when Sylvia told me servants didn’t sit with family.
I deserved them on the floor.
I deserved them when my voice shook.
I deserved them before anyone powerful answered the phone.
That is what I eventually taught Grace.
If someone mistreats you, you should not need an important father before the world takes you seriously.
