The woman beside him wasn’t actually his new wife.
Her name was Elena, and she was helping investigators build a case against Victor.
The ceremony had been part of a larger operation.
The goal was to make Victor believe Adrian was still following the plan everyone expected while investigators gathered evidence.
It explained the strange wedding.
But it didn’t erase what had happened to me.
“You allowed me to believe you were dead,” I said.
Adrian nodded.
“And I don’t know if I’ll ever be able to forgive you for that.”
“I understand.”
Then he reached into his pocket and pulled out a small object.
It was my old wedding ring.
The one I thought had been lost forever.
“I carried it with me,” he said.
I stared at it.
“Why?”
“Because even when I disappeared, I never stopped thinking about you.”
I closed my fingers around the ring.
