I Thought the Strangers in the Back Row Had Come to the Wrong Wedding

“I thought you said bring it out here.”

“I said leave it on the dresser.”

“I’m sorry.”

Under any other circumstances, it would have been funny.

At that moment, it wasn’t.

Reed took the envelope.

“I wrote this for you last night. I was going to leave it in the bridal room before the ceremony. I wanted you to read it alone.”

“So why are those people here?”

The older woman in blue stood.

Reed looked at her.

“Because I invited them.”

I turned back toward him.

“You invited nine people to our wedding without telling me?”

“Ten.”

I stared at him.

“That does not improve the situation.”

Someone behind us laughed before turning it into a cough.

Reed almost smiled.

Almost.

Then the woman walked toward us.

She looked somewhere in her late sixties. Her silver hair was cut short, and she wore comfortable shoes under a dress that was probably nicer than what she normally chose.
