I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

Ruth wrapped both arms around us.

Richard reached for the settlement.

“Emotional speeches won’t stop the bank.”

Frank stepped out of the hallway.

“No, but an emergency fraud notice will.”

Richard’s smile disappeared.

“Who are you?”

“The man who sent copies of that loan document to counsel before you could destroy it.”

Richard grabbed the folder.

“You have no authority here.”

“Neither did you when you signed your wife’s name.”

Richard pointed at Daniel.

“He signed it.”

Daniel flinched.

I turned toward him.

“Is that true?”

“I knew the signature wasn’t yours,” he said.

“I stayed silent.

But I didn’t write it.”

Richard moved toward the door.

“Take my offer, or lose everything.”

After he left, Lily picked up the original consent form.

Her finger stopped beside the witness signature.

“Elaine Mercer,” she read.

“That’s Grandma.”

Richard had told me his mother passed away before we met.
