I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

“You’ll regret tearing apart the life I built.”

“No,” I said.

“I regret trusting you to build it alone.”

Outside, Daniel handed Lily a cashier’s check for every payment he had received.

“I don’t want your money,” she said.

“Then give it away.

But I won’t keep the price of your mother’s silence.”

Lily looked at him for a long moment.

“Come with us.”

“Where?”

She held up the sealed envelope from the genetic clinic.Lily unfolded the report while I held her other hand.

She read the first line twice.

“I don’t carry Daniel’s genetic condition.”

Daniel lowered his head, and a breath escaped him.

“Good.”

Lily looked at the second page.

“The parentage test says Richard is my biological father.”

I closed my eyes.

Ruth’s arm came around my shoulders.

Daniel wiped his face.

“I spent twenty-five years believing you were mine.”
