“Arthur said you exaggerated things to control him.”
I said nothing.
“I was sleeping with your husband.”
“Yes.”
“There’s no excuse.”
“No.”
She swallowed.
“But I didn’t know about the money.”
“The companies?”
“Any of it.”
She slid a phone across the table.
Not hers.
Arthur’s second phone.
A burner.
“I found this in his Miami bag.”
My heart accelerated.
“Why are you giving it to me?”
“Because one of the shell companies has my Social Security number attached to it.”
So Arthur had prepared a scapegoat.
She had finally understood.
“What’s on the phone?”
“Messages with his mother.”
I stared at her.
“And Blackmere.”
“Have you shown federal investigators?”
“My lawyer has a copy.”
I did not touch it.
“Why me?”
Her eyes filled with tears.
“Because there’s something you deserve to hear before the government seals it.”
She unlocked the phone.
Opened an audio file.
