“Listen to me.
Do not waste this.”
I closed my eyes.
Arthur whispered,
“Mom.”
“You wanted an incapacity window.
You have one.
Claire will be destroyed.
Go home Tuesday.
Bring Beatrice.
Let Claire react.
Record everything.”
My hands began shaking.
Arthur:
“That’s my daughter.”
Margaret:
“And Sterling is your future.”
Beatrice stopped the recording.
I stared at the table.
Everything I had believed about cruelty suddenly felt inadequate.
Arthur had betrayed Chloe.
But Margaret had turned her death into strategy within hours.
I looked at Beatrice.
“Why was this recorded?”
“Arthur recorded most calls with his mother.”
“Why?”
“Because he didn’t trust her.”
The irony was almost unbearable.
Then Beatrice said something I did not expect.
“And he was right not to.”
I looked up.
“What does that mean?”
She opened another file.
Bank documents.
Foreign transfers.
Beneficiary records.
The twelve shell companies had not all been Arthur’s.
