Not the money. Not Vanessa. Not even the lie.
It was the realization that the man who had held her while she cried after each miscarriage had been calculating how to use her deepest vulnerability against her.
I reached for my phone.
“Who are you calling?” Spencer demanded.
“Dr. Grant.”
He lunged toward me, but I stepped back.
“You’re not calling anyone!”
Chloe moved between us.
“Don’t you dare touch my mother.”
He froze.
I dialed the doctor’s office and explained what had happened. Within minutes, Dr. Grant returned my call.
Her voice was tight with anger.
She confirmed that the original laboratory report showed they were expecting a girl. She had never authorized Spencer to obtain a replacement report, and she had never changed the medical results.
She also confirmed that the document in the photograph appeared to be a manipulated copy of the original.
“I will send Chloe a verified copy through the patient portal,” she said. “And I want her to know that none of this is her fault.”
