“What if she grows up and asks why we didn’t stay together?”
I took her hand.
“Then you tell her that love isn’t just about wanting someone. It’s about how they treat you when life doesn’t go according to plan.”
She rested her head against my shoulder.
For the first time in weeks, the tears that fell were not tears of humiliation.
They were tears of grief, relief, and the slow beginning of healing.
Then, one month before her due date, Spencer sent Chloe a letter.
It was handwritten.
He didn’t ask her to return. He didn’t mention the company or the inheritance. He admitted that he had spent so much of his life trying to satisfy his father that he had forgotten how to make decisions based on what was right.
He wrote that he had started counseling and was trying to understand why he had treated his marriage like something that could be traded for approval.
