His expression changed the instant he saw what I was holding.
It was brief.
A tightening around his mouth. A flicker of panic in his eyes.
But I saw it.
“What’s that?” he demanded.
“I found it under the cake.”
He reached for it.
I pulled my hand away.
“Let me see it, please,” Chloe whispered.
Spencer immediately turned toward her.
“Baby, it’s probably some stupid prank. Your mother has been looking for a reason to interfere in our marriage for years.”
I had never heard him speak to my daughter that way in front of other people.
Chloe flinched.
That small reaction frightened me more than his anger.
I handed her the envelope.
“It’s yours, sweetheart.”
She carefully opened it and pulled out a folded sheet of paper. As she read the first sentence, the color drained from her face.
Then she read it again.
Her knees nearly buckled.
