Aaron opened the ring box.
A simple diamond caught the Christmas lights.

Noah crossed his arms. “He has not missed a box.”
Ethan nodded. “Longitudinal data supports approval.”
Sophia wiped her eyes. “This is better than the dragon poem.”
Olivia shouted, “Say yes!”
I laughed through tears.

Aaron stood and kissed me as the children exploded around us, jumping, cheering, throwing snow into the air until it fell like silver confetti.
From the porch, Margaret pressed both hands to her heart.
Daniel watched the family he had lost become whole without him at its center.
And perhaps the final miracle was that he accepted it.
Later that night, after the children fell asleep in guest rooms once reserved for visiting generals, I walked alone into the grand hall.
The Christmas tree glowed softly.
The fireplace burned low.
