My ex-husband invited his “childless” former wife to Christmas dinner at his family’s military estate, certain everyone would see the lonely woman he had discarded.

PART 2

Noah looked up at Daniel with wide, curious eyes.

“Are you the daddy who said we never existed?”

The words echoed through the grand hall like a rifle shot.

Daniel staggered back, his face draining of every trace of confidence. His girlfriend slowly removed her hand from his arm, staring at him in disbelief.

“What… does he mean?” she whispered.

No one answered.

Daniel’s mother suddenly covered her mouth, tears filling her eyes as she looked from one child to the next. Four identical pairs of steel-gray eyes. Four unmistakable Reynolds smiles.

“Oh, dear God…” she murmured.

Daniel finally found his voice.

“Kesha… I—I didn’t know.”

I met his eyes without emotion.

“You chose not to know.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Then two investigators from the Texas Department of Public Safety stepped inside, their dark coats dusted with snow. Every relative instinctively turned toward them.

Daniel frowned.
