“Where are the documents?”
I gripped the banister.
“With the investigators.”
“Don’t lie to me.”
Marianne stood behind him in her robe, trembling but upright.
“Daniel, stop this.”
He rounded on her.
“You don’t understand what she’s done.”
“I understand what you are doing.”
Patrick moved behind me.
I had nowhere to go except down.
So I did the only thing Daniel never expected from me.
I went toward him.
I charged down the stairs, not gracefully, not bravely, but with every ounce of terror sharpened into motion.
Daniel reached for me.
I ducked, slammed my shoulder into his chest, and we both crashed into the entry table. A vase shattered. Water and white lilies spilled across the marble floor.
Patrick thundered down after us.
Then the front doors burst open.
Blue and red lights washed over the hall.
Investigator Marlowe entered first, gun drawn, followed by Haines and two uniformed officers.
