My ex-husband invited his “childless” former wife to Christmas dinner at his family’s military estate, certain everyone would see the lonely woman he had discarded.

Her grandchildren.

She took one uncertain step.

Then another.

“May I…” Her voice broke. “May I know their names properly?”

I felt Sophia’s hand tighten around mine.

I knelt before my children.

“This is Mrs. Reynolds,” I said carefully. “She is Daniel’s mother. She didn’t know about you.”

Noah studied her. “So she’s Grandma?”

I looked up at Margaret.

The older woman’s face crumpled.

“Only if you want me to be,” she said.

Olivia, the softest of my four, walked forward first.

She held out one small mittened hand.

“My name is Olivia Grace Reynolds. I like drawing horses, and I don’t like peas.”

Margaret took her hand as though accepting a sacred oath.

“I’m very pleased to meet you, Olivia Grace.”

Sophia followed. “I’m Sophia Marie. I read faster than Noah, but he says it’s because books like me better.”
