My ex-husband invited his “childless” former wife to Christmas dinner at his family’s military estate, certain everyone would see the lonely woman he had discarded.

Thomas Greer had served General Victor Reynolds for twenty-two years.

He knew where bodies were buried.

Not literal bodies, as far as the investigation found.

Worse, perhaps, for a family built on reputation.

He knew where truths had been filed.

“I handled the mail,” Greer said, voice rasping. “General Reynolds instructed me to intercept all correspondence from Kesha Reynolds after the divorce filing.”

Margaret sat frozen on the video feed.

Daniel’s face was gray.

Greer continued.

“He believed Colonel Reynolds’ advancement would be damaged by scandal. A contested pregnancy, possible custody proceedings, financial obligations—he said it would distract from command trajectory.”

My hands curled beneath the desk.

“Did Colonel Daniel Reynolds know the letters were being intercepted?” Captain Hale asked.

Greer coughed.

“Not at first.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

At first.

The two words entered the room like smoke.

Captain Hale leaned forward. “Please clarify.”

Greer looked toward the camera, and for one moment I felt those old military ghosts pressing close.
