My husband forgot to hang up, believing the call had ended — the moment I heard what he really thought of me, I planned a little surprise he would never forget.

I looked right at him and smiled.

“My dear husband, Julian…” I cleared my throat.

PART 2: THE TOAST AND THE TAPE
The dining room went dead silent.

Twelve pairs of eyes turned toward me. Julian sat at the head of the table, his posture rigid, his fork hovering mid-air over his pumpkin pie. Beside him, his mother, Evelyn, smiled warmly, while my own parents leaned forward, expecting a sweet, sentimental declaration of love for our second anniversary.

“Julian,” I began, my voice clear and steady as a bell, “you have spent the last six months telling everyone how hard you’re working for this family. You tell your mother how exhausted you are. You tell my parents how devoted you are to being a provider.”

Julian forced a tight, awkward laugh, shuffling in his seat. “Honey, you don’t need to do this in front of everyone—”

“Oh, but I insist,” I interrupted softly, holding up a small, sleek Bluetooth speaker I had set beside my water glass. “Because actions speak louder than words, but sometimes… recordings speak loudest of all.”
