My husband left me alone at my boss’s Christmas dinner, then texted, “Work came up. Sorry, Issa.”

I didn’t need to.

“Not one word to him until I understand what is happening.”

Tyler stopped.

I had known my husband for eleven years.

I knew the face he made when he was angry.

I knew the face he made when he was frightened.

I knew the tight little crease between his eyebrows when he was calculating a way out of trouble.

What I had never seen before was the expression on his face now.

He looked cornered.

Not surprised.

Cornered.

That distinction chilled me.

Vanessa seemed to realize it too.

She slowly lowered the photograph.

“Tyler,” she whispered. “Tell me this isn’t what I think it is.”

His eyes darted toward the flow of passengers leaving the jet bridge.

“We can’t do this here.”

Vanessa gave a short, disbelieving laugh.

“You proposed to me here.”

A few passengers nearby had begun glancing in our direction.
