My husband secretly married his mistress while I was at work, then returned from his “business trip” expecting to walk back into my $10 million bungalow. But his key no longer worked, because the wife he betrayed had already sold the palace he thought he owned.

The squad car door slammed shut.

The security feed on my tablet went quiet as the police cars drove away into the night, taking Robert with them.

I ended the phone call. The room returned to total silence.

I stood up from the hotel desk, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of my suite at the Ritz-Carlton, and looked out over the city lights.

My phone buzzed again. It was a notification from Instagram.

My mother-in-law had taken down the wedding post. In its place was a frantic, deleted-within-minutes plea for legal help, followed by a sudden deluge of comments from my business associates, friends, and board members who had finally seen the truth.

I didn’t read them. I didn’t need the validation of the public, nor did I need the satisfaction of revenge.

I picked up my glass of water, poured myself a drink, and looked at my reflection in the dark glass of the window.
