“My cousin Rebecca is an attorney. She handles business litigation. I’m calling her.”
It was nearly three in the morning.
Rebecca answered after several rings.
Claire explained that I had left my wedding reception after receiving a frightening warning from my father-in-law.
Rebecca asked whether anyone had threatened me directly.
I told her what Victor had said and read his messages aloud.
She listened carefully.
Then she gave us practical instructions.
I was to remain somewhere safe, preserve every message, avoid signing anything else, and refrain from discussing financial documents with Adrian or his family until I had obtained legal advice.
If I believed anyone was following me or attempting to harm me, I was to contact the police immediately.
She also told me not to assume that every member of the Blackwood family was involved in the same conduct.
“We need evidence,” she said. “Not speculation.”
I agreed.
