I had known Victor Blackwood for almost eight months.
He was the chairman of Blackwood Holdings, a private investment company with interests in construction, property development, and commercial real estate. He was wealthy enough that people lowered their voices when he entered a room.
He had never been particularly friendly toward me.
But he had never seemed frightened of anything.
Until tonight.
Claire opened her laptop.
“Tell me everything he said. Exactly.”
I repeated the conversation.
She listened without interrupting.
Then she asked a question that made my stomach turn.
“Emma, did you sign anything before the wedding?”
I frowned.
“Of course. The marriage paperwork. The prenuptial agreement. Some documents Adrian said we needed for the house.”
Claire went very still.
“What documents for the house?”
I tried to remember.
There had been a folder on Adrian’s desk two days earlier.
He had been preparing for a meeting when he asked me to sign several pages.
