She was eight months pregnant with our sixth child when my husband packed up and said, “I need a few days alone.” Then he disappeared. When our baby was finally born, I received something that revealed what he had been planning all that time

But instead, I wrote:

The baby is healthy. For everything else, you can contact my lawyer.

Daniel called me immediately.

I didn’t answer.

A week later I took our baby home.

As soon as I walked through the door, the children ran to me.

Emma started crying.

Jack immediately wanted to support his little brother.

Sophie touched her little hand.

Ben proudly announced that he would teach him to play football.

Lily looked at the baby and whispered,

“Are you going to live with us forever?”

I smiled in tears.

“Yes.”

That night, after the six children fell asleep, I stood in the hallway.

The house was messy.

There were toys everywhere.

Below was a mountain of laundry for me.

The next day would be exhausting.

And probably the next one too.

Daniel had looked at that life and had only seen responsibilities.

I saw six children who deserved stability, love, and a father who wouldn’t disappear when things got tough.
