Things happening under my own roof.
Things I knew nothing about.
Then the office door opened.
My mother rolled inside.
“That girl,” she said, pointing at Clara, “has treated me more like family than anyone in this house.”
My chest tightened.
“Mother, I’ve given you the best care money can buy.”
Her expression hardened.
“Exactly, Bennett. You gave me money.”
Silence.
“Clara gave me her time.”
I couldn’t answer.
Then Mother reached for Clara’s hand.
“If you fire her, I’m leaving with her.”
“No one’s being fired.”
I thought that ended it.
It didn’t.
Mother looked at me for several seconds, then said quietly:
“There’s something you need to know about Clara.”
Clara immediately went pale.
“Mrs. Hale, please…”
“No,” Mother whispered. “He should’ve been told years ago.”
I slowly stood.
“Years ago?”
My mother looked directly into my eyes.
Then she told me why Clara Reed had really entered my home.
