THE HOUSE THAT TAUGHT US HOW TO COME HOME: A FAMILY’S SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

I felt an unexpected rush of gratitude toward my daughter-in-law.

“So where are you?”

“A hotel near Wildwood. Brenda and Douglas found another place too.”

“And the children?”

“They’re fine. We took them for pizza. They think this is an adventure.”

I smiled.

“Good.”

Gregory became quiet.

Then he said, “Mom, before we left the porch, I looked through the window.”

My fingers tightened around the phone.

“I saw something on the hall desk.”

I knew before he said it.

“An envelope?”

“Yes.”

“Did you read it?”

“No. But I could see Dad’s handwriting.”

I swallowed.

“He wrote my name on it.”

“I know.”

“How long has it been there?”

“I don’t know.”

“I’m driving down tomorrow morning,” I said.

“I can bring it to you.”

“No.”

For the first time all day, I was certain of something.

“I need to go there myself.”

“Do you want company?”
