THE HOUSE THAT TAUGHT US HOW TO COME HOME: A FAMILY’S SECOND CHANCE AT TRUST

Yes.

So I did.

“Hello?”

“Mom?”

Her voice was careful.

“I heard you went down with Gregory.”

“Yes.”

“Can I come over?”

I looked at my son.

He must have guessed because he shrugged.

“Your choice.”

Brenda heard him.

“So he’s there.”

“He drove me.”

“Can I come?”

I thought for a moment.

“Yes.”

She arrived forty minutes later without Douglas or the children.

When she entered, she did not look like the Brenda from yesterday morning.

Her hair was tied back.

No makeup.

No sunglasses.

She carried my empty casserole dish.

“I washed it.”

I nearly smiled.

“Thank you.”

She set it on the kitchen counter.

For several seconds, neither of us knew what to do.

Then she said, “I’m sorry.”

I studied her face.

“I know I should have said it yesterday.”

“Yes.”

“I kept trying to find a way to explain what I meant.”

“And?”
