I slowly lowered my phone.
“Three months ago,” Darius said, “you walked into my life carrying a truth that changed everything I thought I knew about my family.”
My fingers went cold.
Caleb whispered, “Mom?”
I couldn’t answer.
Darius’s voice trembled through the speakers.
“I promised you that today would be different.
I promised that when we reached Atlanta, I would stop hiding what happened.”
Silence.
Then came the sentence that shattered something inside me.
“Maya, if this ever gets back to you, I am sorry I didn’t tell you myself.”
My name.
My husband had just said my name to an airplane full of strangers.
Beside me, Caleb had stopped breathing normally.
“Why did Dad say your name?”
I stared at the speaker above us.
Darius continued.
“And Caleb…”
My son’s fingers tightened around mine.
“If you ever hear this someday, please understand that none of this changes how much I love you.”
