My hands shook on the steering wheel.
Rachel called twice.
I ignored her.
When Simone opened the door, she smiled automatically.
Then she saw my face.
The smile disappeared.
“Maya?”
“You worked at Greenhaven.”
She froze.
There are silences that are answers.
This was one.
“You told me you were only a patient.”
“Maya—”
“You worked in the laboratory.”
“Not exactly.”
“Do not lie to me again.”
Leah appeared behind her.
“Mom?”
Simone immediately turned.
“Go upstairs, sweetheart.”
“Why?”
“Please.”
Leah looked at me.
I forced my expression to soften.
“Hi, Leah.”
“Hi.”
After she went upstairs, Simone stepped outside and closed the door.
Her entire body was trembling.
“I can explain.”
“Did you switch the embryos?”
“No.”
The answer came instantly.
Too instantly.
“Evelyn Marks says someone changed the labels.”
Simone’s face collapsed.
“She talked?”
“Did you switch them?”
“No.”
“You had access.”
“Yes.”
“You were there that morning.”
