BEST PILOT EVER.
Something tightened in my throat.
“He’s going to love it.”
“You think?”
“I know.”
Caleb carefully folded the picture again.
“I’m giving it to him after we land.”
That was the plan.
After we landed, Caleb would run toward his father, hand him the drawing, and Darius would realize that his family had secretly flown with him.
I imagined the surprise on his face.
I imagined Darius lifting Caleb into his arms.
I imagined the picture we would take together.
I imagined everything.
Except what actually happened.
Getting through the airport without Darius seeing us was harder than expected.
We had nearly reached security when Caleb suddenly froze.
“Mom.”
“What?”
“Mom.”
Something in his voice made me stop.
He pointed.
Darius was crossing the terminal less than thirty feet away.
Even after eleven years together, seeing him in uniform did something to me.
He looked taller somehow.
