I wanted the place transformed.
We removed the sealed basement entirely and rebuilt the foundation. The kitchen became bright and open, with large windows facing the yard.
My nephew chose his bedroom upstairs.
He picked blue walls, baseball curtains, and shelves for books.
We adopted a German Shepherd from the shelter.
The dog slept outside his room during the first several months.
My parents helped.
My mother cooked more food than two people could possibly eat. My father repaired fences and complained about every tool I owned.
They both carried guilt for missing the signs.
So did I.
We learned that guilt could either keep us staring backward or make us more attentive in the present.
We chose the present.
Two years later, my nephew was taller and healthier.
His laugh came without fear.
He played baseball, argued about homework, forgot to put away his shoes, and complained when I limited screen time.
