A 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck several cities across Colombia and sparked moments of panic
A powerful earthquake of magnitude 7.4 shook Colombia on Monday, August 10, causing moments of panic, material damage and numerous victims in different areas of the country.
The epicenter was located in the vicinity of San José del Palmar, in the department of Chocó, about 103 kilometers deep, according to information from the Colombian Geological Survey. The movement was recorded at 7:34 a.m. local time, and was perceived in hundreds of locations.
The strong movement surprised thousands of people
The earthquake was felt strongly in different departments of central and western Colombia. In several localities, the inhabitants quickly left their homes and buildings in fear of possible landslides.
Videos posted on social media show moments of distress, affected buildings and people trying to get to safety while movements continued.
The number of victims is increasing
The casualty balance continues to be updated while emergency teams work in the affected areas.
According to the latest report available, 132 people are killed and around 570 injured, although authorities warn that the figures could change while search and rescue work continue.
Early reports had reported 111 deaths and 87 injuries, but the number subsequently increased during emergency care efforts.
