Eight minutes after our divorce became official, my ex-husband looked at me with a smug little smile and said I was walking away with nothing. But as I left with my children and two passports in my hand, he had no idea the folder waiting in my car was about to destroy the future his family had already begun celebrating.

“The penthouse has been reclaimed under your family’s trust deed. His sister Brittany was forced to move out yesterday. Bradley’s bail has been set, but his family has no liquid assets left to post it. You are completely clear, Sarah. The past cannot touch you now.”

Sarah read the email slowly, feeling neither joy nor anger. She felt only a deep, cleansing stillness.

She didn’t hate Bradley. Hatred required energy, and Bradley was no longer worth a single joule of her strength. He had traded a loyal wife, two loving children, and a decade of devotion for a illusion made of lies and vanity. He had chosen his poison; now he had to drink it.

“Mom!”

Madison’s bright voice shattered the morning quiet. The little girl came running out to the garden, clutching her drawing paper, her eyes wide with excitement.

“Mom, look! A plane!”
