Eight minutes after our divorce became official, my ex-husband looked at me with a smug little smile and said I was walking away with nothing. But as I left with my children and two passports in my hand, he had no idea the folder waiting in my car was about to destroy the future his family had already begun celebrating.

Sarah looked up into the pale blue London sky. High above the clouds, a silver jet trailed a line of white smoke, heading west across the Atlantic.

Madison tugged on Sarah’s coat, pointing upward. “Is that one flying somewhere magical, Mom?”

Sarah kneeled down on the soft grass, pulling her daughter close and wrapping her arms around her. Connor ran out a moment later, kicking his soccer ball across the lawn and laughing as it rolled into the flowerbed.

Sarah looked at her children—safe, whole, and free from the shadows of a toxic house.

“No, sweetheart,” Sarah whispered, kissing the top of Madison’s head as a gentle breeze rustled the autumn leaves around them. “It’s not flying toward somewhere magical. We are already here.”
