I Thought the Strangers in the Back Row Had Come to the Wrong Wedding

He wasn’t avoiding anything anymore.

I stood.

“Okay.”

He looked up at me.

“Okay what?”

“We’re finishing the wedding.”

“You sure?”

“No.”

He blinked.

I held out my hand.

“I’m still mad.”

“Fair.”

“And we’re talking about this again tomorrow.”

“Absolutely.”

“And never surprise me with ten mystery guests again.”

“Also fair.”

He took my hand.

We walked back.

Everyone stood when we returned, which was awkward because nobody knew whether they were supposed to.

I looked at Paul.

“Where were we?”

Paul opened his book.

“Technically, Reed had just derailed the entire ceremony.”

Everyone laughed.

This time I did too.

We started again.

Not from the beginning.

From exactly where we’d stopped.

Reed read his vows without the little cards he had prepared.

They weren’t especially poetic.

He forgot part of them.

He repeated himself once.

But there was one sentence I remember word for word.
