“I’ve spent a lot of my life trying to become someone who looked like he had never needed help.”
He glanced toward the back row.
“That’s not the man I want to be married as.”
Claudia cried.
So did Hank.
Dana cried harder than both of them.
I made Reed promise honesty, obviously.
That got another laugh.
We got married.
At the reception, I finally met the ten guests.
They didn’t spend the evening telling me tragic stories about Reed.
That surprised me.
They told funny ones.
Hank told me Reed used to order coffee and then sit for four hours because it was the cheapest thing on the menu.
Claudia said he once repaired a broken cabinet at Harbor House without being asked and somehow made it worse.
The woman who had worked mornings at the diner told me Reed used to save half his pancakes in a napkin for later.
