I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

“May I photograph this?”

I looked at him.

“Why would you help me?”

“Because whoever sent that picture of your daughter wants you frightened, not informed.”

Beth covered my shaking hand with hers.

“And because nobody should face this alone.”

Daniel’s phone buzzed.

He read the message and went pale.

“What is it?” I asked.

“Ship security wants to speak to me.”

Two uniformed officers appeared at the entrance.

“Mr.

Daniel Mercer?” one asked.

“A complaint says you obtained passage under a false identity and are threatening a passenger.”

Richard was trying to remove him before he could explain.

Frank rose.

“Officer, I witnessed part of their conversation, and I’ve preserved photographs of the documents.”

The officer looked between us.

“Mrs.

Mercer, do you feel threatened by this man?”

I looked at Daniel.

“Not at this moment.

But I want his documents copied before either of us leaves this room.”
