I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

Daniel leaned forward.

“He asked me to be the donor.

Elaine promised the clinic had your permission.”

Elaine closed her eyes.

“And I lied to him.”

Daniel stood so quickly that his chair scraped the floor.

“You told me she had agreed.”

“I know.”

“You let Richard pay me as if I were something shameful.”

“I paid you at first,” Elaine said.

“Richard took over after my stroke.”

“Why did he tell us you had passed away?” I asked.

“Because I threatened to confess.”

Elaine handed the notebook to Lily.

Inside were dates, payments, and account numbers.

The latest entries matched the loan taken against our house.

“I recorded him during his last visit,” Elaine said.

“He admitted moving the money through an account in Daniel’s name.”

The door opened.

Richard stood there with his divorce lawyer.

“Mother, give me the notebook.”

Elaine’s hand tightened around it.

“No.”
