I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

Richard looked at Lily.

“You shouldn’t be here.”

“She’s my grandmother,” Lily said.

“The one you told me was gone.”

“I was protecting you from a confused woman.”

Elaine reached beneath her blanket and pressed a button.

A small recorder played Richard’s voice.

If she won’t sign the settlement, I’ll empty the account before her lawyer finds it.

Richard lunged toward the bed.

Daniel stepped between them.

“Move.”

“No.”

“You’re still living on my money.”

Daniel removed a bank card and placed it on the table.

“Not anymore.”

Richard turned to me.

“Listen carefully.

If you use that recording, Daniel will be implicated.

Lily’s conception will become public.

Every friend, every neighbor, everyone she works with will know.”

Lily walked to the door and opened it.

“Then they’ll know my father was too afraid to tell the truth.”

A nurse appeared in the hallway.
