I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

“Is there a problem?”

“Yes,” Elaine said.

“My son is trying to take my property.”

The nurse raised her phone.

“The hallway camera recorded him entering, and I’ve called security.”

Richard’s lawyer touched his arm.

“We should leave.”

Richard looked at me.

“You think this makes you strong?

By tomorrow, the bank will own your house.”

“Then I’ll lose a house,” I said.

“You’re losing your daughter.”

Lily stood beside me.

Richard’s face changed.

“Lily, come with me.”

“No.”

“After everything I’ve done for you?”

“No,” she repeated.

Security arrived.

Richard backed into the hall, but he pointed at Elaine before leaving.

“She doesn’t control those accounts anymore.”

Elaine waited until the door shut.

“He’s right,” she said.

She pulled a sealed letter from beneath the notebook.

“Richard had me declared financially incompetent.

His lawyer controls my records, and he’ll say this notebook is the invention of a confused old woman.”
