My name appeared beneath the words CONSENT TO RELATED DONOR PROCEDURE.
“That isn’t my signature.”
“I know,” Daniel said.
A second page carried Daniel’s name beside the word DONOR.
Beneath it was a recent genetic report recommending that any biological children be tested for an inherited heart condition.
I pushed back my chair.
“You’re saying Lily is your daughter?”
“Biologically, she may be.”
“May be?”
“Richard told me the procedure worked.
He started paying me the month she was born.”
“You said you found him six months ago.”
Daniel looked down.
“I said it badly.”
“No.
You lied clearly.”
“I came back six months ago.
I’ve known Richard most of my life.”
My phone rang.
Richard’s name filled the screen.
“Answer it,” Daniel said.
“Put him on speaker.”
I pressed the button.
“Where are you?” Richard demanded.
“At dinner with your brother.”
“He isn’t my brother.”
