I took a solo cruise after my husband divorced me—on Day Four, a stranger sat at my table and whispered, “I’m the reason your husband left you.” Then he reached into his pocket.

The restaurant sounds seemed to disappear.

“What missing money?”

“Don’t listen to him,” Richard said.

“Come home, and I’ll explain privately.”

“I asked you for an explanation three weeks ago.”

“And now I’m offering one.”

Daniel slid another sheet toward me.

It was a statement for a loan secured against our house.

The borrower’s signature looked like mine.

“I never signed this,” I whispered.

Richard drew a sharp breath through the phone.

“If you show that paper to anyone, Lily loses her trust fund.”

“You would punish our daughter?”

“I’m warning you what Daniel has already put at risk.”

Daniel pointed to the final line.

The loan proceeds had been transferred to an account bearing his name.

“That isn’t my account,” he said.

Richard’s voice dropped.

“You have no idea what you’re holding.”

“Then tell me.”

“Come home alone.”

The call ended.
