The following morning, Jennifer came downstairs wearing a dark green dress.

Lizzie followed in a navy one.

“You’re not seriously going.”

“We are,” Jennifer said.

“Why?”

Lizzie picked up her purse.

“Because I want to hear what she’s been telling these people.”

“This could become very uncomfortable.”

Jennifer’s face softened.

“Grandma, it’s been uncomfortable for twenty years. We just weren’t in the room.”

I hated that she was right.

“Fine. Be careful.”

Jennifer shook her head.

“You’re coming.”

“No.”

“Yes.”

“This has nothing to do with me.”

Lizzie smiled faintly.

“If we’re taking a family photograph, the person who actually raised us should probably be in the building.”
