I stared at him.
“She’s your wife, Spencer. Not a business arrangement.”
He rolled his eyes.
“You wouldn’t understand.”
“Try me.”
He hesitated before speaking.
“My father built a company worth millions. He wants a grandson to inherit the family name and eventually take over the business. If Chloe gives birth to a boy, everything is secure. If she has a girl, things become complicated.”
“Complicated?” Chloe repeated.
Spencer rubbed his forehead.
“He’s old-fashioned. That’s all.”
“And you thought the solution was to pay a bakery to lie to your pregnant wife?”
His silence answered for him.
Chloe slowly lowered the letter.
“Is the baby really a girl?”
Spencer looked at her.
“Chloe—”
“Answer me!”
He closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The word was barely audible.
Chloe stumbled backward.
I wrapped my arms around her as she began sobbing.
“She is our daughter,” she whispered. “Our baby. How could you be ashamed of her before she’s even born?”
