“Then tell me.”
He glanced toward his vehicle.
“My father has controlled every part of my life. Since I was a child, he has told me that the Hayes name must continue through a male heir. I was terrified of losing everything.”
“So you decided to make Chloe pay the price?”
He said nothing.
I stepped closer.
“You know what hurts me most? She spent years blaming herself for not being able to carry a pregnancy to term. She wondered if her body had failed you. And all that time, you were preparing to punish her if the baby wasn’t the child your father wanted.”
“I never blamed her for the miscarriages.”
“Perhaps not with words. But you made her believe that giving you a daughter would be another failure.”
His face changed.
For one brief moment, I thought he might finally understand.
Then he said, “If she leaves me, my father will cut me off. She’ll be destroying our child’s future.”
